Since 2021 we have had regular Green pages in the Bulletin, reporting on environmental issues.   That was also the year in which our Environment Coordinators developed the SHRA environment strategy, which has four goals:

  • To protect and nurture the biodiversity of Strawberry Hill.
  • To foster an exploration, understanding and appreciation of the nature of Strawberry Hill.
  • To support resident enjoyment of gardens and gardening.
  • To support residents r=to reduce their carbon footprint.

The three regular environmental activities are organising the monthly litter pick, maintaining the SHRA planter in Tower Road (in memory of Clare Phelps former SHRA Secretary) and monitoring the recycling centre in Wellesley Parade.

The Village litter pick began on Saturday 9 July 2022 and has been held on the second Saturday of each month ever since.  There is a What’s App group so members of the group can maintain contact, but all are welcome (email us at springclean@shra.org.uk).  We meet at 9am in Wellesley Parade by the SHRA bench and pick for an hour in streets around the centre of the Village.  Residents are also welcomed to choose their own route to include their own streets.  On three occasions we have attempted a Big Litter Pick covering all 42 streets and closes of Strawberry Hill.  Equipment is borrowed from the environmental charity, Habitats & Heritage. Find out more in Bulletin 178 and 182:

Students from St Mary’s University also join the litter pick focusing on clearing Radnor Gardens, our principal public green space.

We also receive some funding from the Council for monitoring the recycling centre at Wellesley Parade where there has been fly tipping in the past.  SHRA also created and maintain the planter in Tower Road next to MKG 3000 garage.  You can learn about local environment issues from the discussion between our Environment Coordinator and South Twickenham Ward Green Councillor, Richard Bennett.

The Council’s verges policy has been regularly raised as an issue by residents.
