Strawberry Hill: A History of the Neighbourhood
The Association has sponsored the production of a local history book, Strawberry Hill: A History of the Neighbourhood, now in its fifth edition. It was written by a former Chair of SHRA, Anthony Beckles Willson (1928-2016), and first published in 1991. He focused on the topography of the 42 streets and closes of the area and its public spaces rather than the famous people that lived here. We have maintained the interest in buildings, but ther is more of a focus on unknown, but interesting people that lived here. The book examines the development of the area with a set of maps from 1900 and many vintage photographs. The book has been updated with new information gained from the street and house history research that we have been undertaking for the past few years. New features include a building and street index and a Roll of Honour for 1914-1918. The new edition was launched by Munira Wilson MP on 15 July 2022 in the Great Parlour of Strawberry Hill House.
The book will be of great interest to local residents and, more widely, to people who value local history in Richmond, London and beyond. You can buy a copy in the shop at Strawberry Hill House or order a copy from us (price £8 and free local delivery) at contact@shra.org.uk.
